It is best to keep your pets indoors, but some animals like being outside. For outdoor pets, make sure they have a dry, warm place to sit or lay. The Humane Society suggests making raised shelters with cedar shavings in them that are small enough to hold in your pets body heat.

2. Have your pet wear booties, if they are comfortable with them, or sweaters. If you have a husky, of course, the snow and cold will bother them less than a shorthair breed, such as a Chihuahua. Keep tabs on when your pet appears cold and take them inside to warm up at the first sign they are chilly! As for paws, if your dog does not like wearing booties, the ASPCA suggests swiping on some petroleum jelly to protect your pet from chemicals and cold.

3. One of the most important winter hazards is to avoid having your pet walk through any salt. Spreading salt is good for getting rid of ice and snow but can make your pets paws hurt. If your pet happens to walk through a patch of salt, The Humane Society says you should wipe their paws with a damp towel. Make sure to wipe off the salt before your pet can lick it because the salt will irritate their mouth. For your own home, use pet-friendly salts or spreads for your walkways.

4. Another hazard is antifreeze spills. Antifreeze has a sweet flavor that may entice animals to eat it. However, it is extremely poisonous! Do not let your pet near it, and clean it up well if you encounter a spill.

Keeping your pet dry and warm is the best way to sustain their comfort through winter. Remember, if you are cold, your animal probably is too. So snuggle up and share each other’s warmth!

Any other wintertime tips you have for pets?
