If left untreated, some of these illnesses can be life-threatening, so it\u2019s\u00a0important to know what the\u00a0signs and symptoms of some of these ailments are, and how to prevent them.<\/p>\n<p>To help you protect your pup, here is a list of 5 common puppy illnesses to watch out for.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a01.\u00a0<\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: 0.95em;\">Distemper<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>What\u00a0it looks like<\/em>: It will usually appear as sneezing, eye discharge,\u00a0loss of appetite,\u00a0or\u00a0hardening of footpads\u00a0and nose. If\u00a0left untreated it can lead to pneumonia, seizures, and\u00a0brain damage.<\/p>\n<p><em>If they show symptoms<\/em>: Take them to the vet right away. They will probably be\u00a0given\u00a0antibiotics and medications to combat their symptoms, but there is no cure for distemper.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/syringe-1884758_1920.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-3506 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/syringe-1884758_1920-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"Dog Illnesses \" width=\"257\" height=\"154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/syringe-1884758_1920-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/syringe-1884758_1920-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/syringe-1884758_1920-1024x614.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/syringe-1884758_1920.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>How to Prevent it<\/em>:\u00a0Vaccinate!\u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com\/vet-distemper-dog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Distemper vaccine<\/a> is\u00a0available for puppies when they\u2019re 6-8 weeks of age.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a02.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Parvovirus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>What it looks like<\/em>:\u00a0It may appear as bloody diarrhea,\u00a0vomiting, and a loss of appetite.<\/p>\n<p><em>If they show symptoms<\/em>:\u00a0Take them to the vet.\u00a0They will probably have to\u00a0undergo fluid therapy, and will be given antibiotics and anti-nausea medications.<\/p>\n<p><em>How to prevent it<\/em>: Vaccinate! The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vetstreet.com\/care\/parvovirus-vaccine-for-dogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Parvovirus\u00a0vaccine\u00a0<\/a>is recommended for puppies 6-8 weeks of age, but they need to be\u00a0given booster shots at\u00a03-week\u00a0intervals until they are 16 weeks of age for the vaccine to be most effective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Heartworm Disease<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em>What it looks like<\/em>: It may look like your pup is fatigued, or has a decreased appetite. They may also lose a considerable amount of weight over time.<\/p>\n<p><em>If they show symptoms<\/em>: Take them to your vet where they can get the medicine to kill the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/veterinarians-739252_1280.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3507 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/veterinarians-739252_1280-300x192.jpg\" alt=\"Dog Illnesses \" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/veterinarians-739252_1280-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/veterinarians-739252_1280-768x492.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/veterinarians-739252_1280-1024x656.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/veterinarians-739252_1280-140x90.jpg 140w, https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/veterinarians-739252_1280.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>heartworms. They may also require hospitalization.<\/p>\n<p><em>How to prevent it<\/em>: You can give your pup a monthly heartworm preventative pill. Most pills are safe for puppies to take by the time they\u2019re 6-8 weeks old.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Bordetella <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em>What it looks like<\/em>: Your pup may have a persistent, dry wheezing cough, along with runny eyes and nose. If left untreated, it may turn into an upper respiratory infection, and in rare cases, pneumonia.<\/p>\n<p><em>If they show symptoms<\/em>: Take them to the vet and keep them away from other dogs so they won\u2019t spread the illness. Your vet will probably prescribe your pup an antibiotic depending on the severity of the cough.<\/p>\n<p><em>How to prevent it<\/em>: Vaccinate! The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vetstreet.com\/care\/bordetella-vaccine-for-dogs-and-cats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bordetella vaccine<\/a> is available to puppies 6-8 weeks of age. You will need to get a booster shot for your pup at 10-12 weeks of age, and then booster shots every 12 months.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a05.\u00a0<\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: 0.95em;\">Coccidia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em>What it looks like<\/em>: Your pup may experience diarrhea, have blood in their sto<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/dog-2911444_1920.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-3510 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/dog-2911444_1920-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Dog Illnesses \" width=\"251\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/dog-2911444_1920-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/dog-2911444_1920-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/dog-2911444_1920-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/dog-2911444_1920.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 251px) 100vw, 251px\" \/><\/a>ol, or be dehydrated.<\/p>\n<p><em>If they show symptoms<\/em>: Take your pup straight to the vet. They will most likely be given drugs to kill the Coccidia parasite.<\/p>\n<p><em>How to prevent it<\/em>: Coccidia is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.petmd.com\/dog\/conditions\/infectious-parasitic\/c_multi_coccidiosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">microscopic<\/a>, and is most commonly found in environments with other infected animals.
