{"id":1209,"date":"2016-03-24T09:44:05","date_gmt":"2016-03-24T16:44:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/?p=1209"},"modified":"2018-08-14T20:23:45","modified_gmt":"2018-08-15T03:23:45","slug":"the-puppy-mill-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/adopt-dont-shop\/the-puppy-mill-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"The Puppy Mill Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As many of you may know, Sitting for a Cause has long been an advocate of the Adopt, Don\u2019t Shop movement. \u00a0It should come as no surprise that as Adopt, Don\u2019t Shop supporters, we were happy to hear about the legislation passed in Boston two weeks ago and how it\u2019s setting some amazing precedents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/puppy-1221791_1920.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4989 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/puppy-1221791_1920-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"The Puppy Mill Bill\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/puppy-1221791_1920-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/puppy-1221791_1920-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/puppy-1221791_1920-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/puppy-1221791_1920.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>According to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/metro\/2016\/03\/02\/boston-city-council-bans-commercially-bred-animals-pet-stores\/9MH407n0ag03z4mIekdzEM\/story.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boston Globe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, back in February, a bill putting a stop to the unsanitary and inhumane treatment of animals bred for profit was proposed. \u00a0Matt O\u2019Malley proposed the bill to target puppy mills by making the pet store sale of puppies, kittens, and bunnies from commercial breeders a punishable offense in Boston. \u00a0Similarly, the bill included an\u00a0ordinance to unauthorize the sale of baby animals in public places (such as a litter of kittens sold from a cardboard box). \u00a0Now, pet stores are only allowed to advertise animals from shelters in their windows, giving the shelter animals an even better chance of adoption since they are more accessible, face less competition, and are able to escape the stigma of being \u201cdamaged goods.\u201d \u00a0This also alleviates a\u00a0massive burden on shelters trying to combat overcrowding while struggling\u00a0with the added hardship of being\u00a0understaffed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proposal didn\u2019t stop there. \u00a0In order to make the humane treatment of animals paramount (rather than prioritizing commercial and financial gain) any breeder within the Boston area now needs to be legally licensed. \u00a0The retainment of this license will be dependent on the approval of ASPCA inspections of the animals and their conditions as well as approval of Boston Animal Welfare in order to stay in business legally. \u00a0This seemed like a tall order only a few short months ago, but in order to regulate and ensure the safety of the animals in commercial breeding the Massachusetts residents knew something needed to give.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/dogue-de-bordeaux-1047522_1920.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4990 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/dogue-de-bordeaux-1047522_1920-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"The Puppy Mill Bill\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/dogue-de-bordeaux-1047522_1920-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/dogue-de-bordeaux-1047522_1920-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/dogue-de-bordeaux-1047522_1920-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sittingforacause.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/dogue-de-bordeaux-1047522_1920.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>And it did, with unexpected enthusiasm. \u00a0Amazingly the Boston Circuit Court announced that the \u00a0bill passed unanimously. \u00a0It is now being hailed as the \u201cPuppy Mill Bill,\u201d and is influencing legislation in many other states. Though similar bills have passed in other states like Ohio as long ago as 2014 requiring breeders to obtain licenses, none has gone as far to ensure the inspections, regulations, and humane conditions as the one passed in Boston. \u00a0Alabama, may be\u00a0another state that is close behind Massachusetts, since there is currently a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/pass-the-puppy-mill-bill\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">petition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> circulating and asking for the same bill to be passed for their state as well. \u00a0When it comes to the fight for humane treatment of animals everywhere there have been loses. \u00a0However, the passing of The Puppy Mill Bill is hopefully the first big win of many for animal rights activists everywhere. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you think of this new legislation?
